ABC Store is a legendary small town store in Belle, Missouri. It was founded in 1949 by Terry Abel who had a dream, and Jess Birdsong who loved Terry as a son. Hence, the name Abel Birdsong Clothing Store. However, many call it by it's familiar name, The ABC Store.
Many stories have been handed down through the years as to how the store got started. Jess Birdsong approached his new son-in-law, Terry, and asked if a clothing store would go over in Belle. Terry believed it would, so Jess started it up and asked Terry to run it. The official opening was November 10th, 1949. Within a few years, Terry had bought every item in inventory and the building itself. The rest is history.
The ABC Store offers a wide range of goods, which include Carhart brand clothing, Levi Jeans, Muck Boots, and Red Wing Boots, just to name a few. Customers have traveled from destinations as far as three hours away for Terry Abel's prices. The ABC Store can boast of having some of the cheapest fare in Mid-Missouri, if not the state.
In the summer of 2017, this business celebrated being open for 68 years during the Belle Fair Parade. It has withheld the test of time, and big stores moving in right down the road.
UPDATE: This website was created in the early spring of 2014, with the possibility of selling items online. As you know, Terry and Doris's beloved store just endured a fire. At this time, no one knows what will happen. The fire destroyed much of the store, and it broke their hearts. THANK YOU for your outpouring of love. If you could share your favorite memory of a time with Terry or Doris in the store, the family would really appreciate it. Memories of you will keep them going in the days ahead.
